THE PROBLEM:
YOUR HOME.
Your home has just what pests want: food, moisture and shelter. As an added bonus, it protects them from natural predators like lizards and birds. Once they discover you, they and all their buddies can invade full force – spreading germs, aggravating allergies, eating clothing and paper and thanking you with bites and stings.
Insects can enter your home or business through cracks as small as 1/64 of an inch. A hole the size of a pencil looks like double doors to a mouse.
It’s amazing how much havoc a tiny pest can create. Wood damage, droppings, maddening webs, holes in fur and wool clothing, contaminated food….the list goes on.
PESTS CAN IRRITATE YOUR ALLERGIES.
If you can’t stop sneezing and can’t figure out why, it could be pests irritating your allergies. But that’s not all you should be worried about. For little-bitty creatures, pests rack up big numbers. Cockroaches can carry 33 different kinds of bacteria. Rodents leave 20-50 allergy-irritating droppings per day. Flies carry more than 100 disease-causing pathogens. Disease-carrying ticks can live more than 500 days without a meal. Ridding your home or business of these potentially dangerous invaders is not a do-it-yourself project. It takes an expert like the technicians at Clark’s to break the pest life cycle and put you back in charge.
ALLERGENS
Pests can irritate allergies in sensitive individuals in a number of ways. Direct contact, airborne and ingestion, to name a few. At their worst, pests can cause anaphylaxis, a severe reaction that can be life-threatening.
ASTHMA
Allergens build up from the fecal droppings and the shedded skin of the cockroach. When these become airborne, they negatively affect the quality of the air in your home or business.
BACTERIA
If you have pests in your home, you’re susceptible to disease. Pests can carry all kinds of disease-causing pathogens and bacteria into your home or business and spread them around with their feet, bodies and droppings.
FOOD SOURCES
Flies, roaches, rats, mice and ants, for example, can transport many of the bacteria that cause food-borne illnesses such as salmonella and E. coli right into your home or business.
A BUG’S PARADISE.
Even the cleanest homes and businesses can attract pests with water leaks, mature vegetation, dirty trash bins and other seemingly innocent household issues. Do a quick once-over to find potential trouble spots.
WATER LEAKS
Water can accumulate around your house for lots of reasons: a leaking roof, blocked gutters, a leaky faucet or a sprinkler system that over-waters the lawn. All that moisture is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and a welcome mat for crickets and flies.
DIRTY DISHES
Too tired to do the dishes? Better think again. Pests make a beeline for dirty dishes and sinks, food left out in the open and food in the pantry that's not tightly sealed. Grain weevils, cockroaches and rodents are common after-dinner guests.
ATTIC SPACE
When it's cold outside, pests look for warmth. The tiniest gaps between plumbing pipes and walls and around windows and vents can lure rodents, spiders and other pests to set up housekeeping in your attic or crawlspace.
PET FOOD BOWLS
Your pets aren't the only ones who appreciate their water and food bowls. Insects, especially ants, are attracted to water, leftover dog food and even the dirty empty bowl.
VEGETATION
Mature vegetation close to your house does wonders for pests. They use it for shelter, food and even as a bridge to get inside your home. Old leaves and stacked firewood can draw carpenter ants, termites and other bugs.
TRASH BINS
Trash is a necessary evil for people and a nonstop party for pests. Frequently emptied, closed, clean trash bins can help keep flies, rodents, roaches, ants and other pesky creatures to a minimum.

BED BUG CONTROL
Once upon a time, bed bugs were only mentioned during that famous children’s nursery rhyme.
Once upon a time, bed bugs were only mentioned during that famous children’s nursery rhyme. In fact, many people thought they were fictitious – until these pesky little creatures started invading homes, hotels and hospitals.
HOW TO IDENTIFY BED BUGS
APPEARANCE
Bed bugs have flat, oval shaped, wingless bodies ranging from the size of a poppy seed to a quarter‑inch long. They’re brown in color until after a meal, when the blood they ingest turns them dark red.
BEHAVIOR, DIET & HABITS
At home, bed bug infestation usually starts in and around the bed. Bed bugs only feed on blood and under the right conditions bed bugs have been able to survive up to a year without a meal. They love cracks and crevices and can be found in mattress seams and tufts, sheets, blankets and pillows and behind baseboards, switch plates and picture frames. Bed bugs travel the globe, hiding in suitcases, clinging to clothing and hopping on furniture as it’s moved from place to place. They typically come out at night to feed, but during the day they stay within a five-foot radius of the bed.
SIGNS OF A BED BUG INFESTATION
1SEEING THE BUGS. Adult bed bugs are about the shape and size of an apple seed.
2CASE SKINS. As the juvenile bugs grow, they shed their skins, discovery of which can indicate their presence.
3DEFECATION. After feeding, bed bugs return to their harborage to hide where they defecate black to brown stains on porous surfaces or black to brown mounds on nonporous surfaces.
4BITES also may indicate bed bug activity, but further signs will need to be found, since other sources can cause red welts on the skin.
HOW CLARK’S HANDLES BED BUGS
If you suspect bed bugs, you’ll most likely need professional pest control treatment to get rid of them. Not only are bed bugs hard to get rid of, they multiply quickly so the sooner you take action, the better. A Clark’s technician will do an inspection and recommend a plan of attack to get rid of bed bugs now and prevent them from hatching in the future.
TIPS TO KEEP BED BUGS AT BAY
Get rid of household clutter, which makes it easier to spot pests.
Wash and dry bed linens often and use the hottest temperature allowed for the fabric.
Closely inspect secondhand furniture and other items that could be carrying bed bugs before bringing them into your home.
Look under mattresses and on your bed frames, headboards and other bedroom furniture for signs of bed bugs.
When you travel, keep your luggage on a luggage rack away from the bed and walls.
Inspect your luggage carefully when you pack and after you return home. Keep it off the bed and store it in a closet away from your bedroom.
As soon as you get home from a trip, put the clothing that was in your luggage in the dryer on the highest setting for at least 15 minutes.
MOSQUITO CONTROL.
Here’s an amazing statistic: mosquitoes are responsible for more human deaths each year than any other animal. That’s because they can pass along a host of diseases from malaria to dengue fever that claim millions of lives.
HOW TO IDENTIFY MOSQUITOES
APPEARANCE
Mosquitoes have one pair of scaled wings with a pair of halters (modified wings for balance), slender bodies and long legs.
There are 3,000 species of mosquitoes worldwide and 150 in the United States. A common variety is the northern house mosquito, which is brown with white markings on its legs and proboscis. The Anopheles quadrimaculatus, the one responsible for spreading malaria in this country, is brown and has three long projections on its head.
BEHAVIOR, DIET & HABITS
Although they look fragile, they are extremely resilient and prey on a variety of animals. Mosquitoes typically feed within 100 feet of where they breed, but they can fly as far as 1½ miles for a meal. They prefer to lay their eggs in shallow, stagnant water such as ponds, marshes and swamps, but they thrive in ditches, bird baths, wading pools, low-lying sprinkler heads, gutters, old tires and other very unnatural environs.
HOW CLARK’S HANDLES MOSQUITOES
A Clark’s technician will inspect the exterior of your home to spot mosquito breeding grounds and recommend steps to control the problem. Clark’s monthly service during peak mosquito season will put a stop to your pesky problem.
WILDLIFE SERVICES.
All of us at Clark’s love wildlife just as much as everyone else, which is why we use safe, humane techniques to remove animals from your home or business and prevent them from coming back.
ATTIC NEST
Mice can squeeze through dime-size openings. In your attic, they tunnel through the insulation and make nests, reducing its effectiveness.
DROPPINGS
Small black capsule-shaped or rod-shaped pellets are signs of rodents. Don’t just clean up; clear them out before they do damage.
NOISE
Rodents chew constantly to wear their teeth down. If you hear something that sounds like heavy scratching, you may have company.
DAMAGE
Chewed-up electrical wires, ductwork and PVC pipes may indicate rodents are making themselves at home in your house.
RODENTS
Squirrels and rats and skunks, oh my! Rodents in the attic, trash cans and under the house can gnaw on your nerves and your property. Many rodents’ front teeth grow continually, so they gnaw incessantly on surfaces to wear their teeth down.
PROPERTY DAMAGE & HOUSE FIRES
Once inside a home or business, rodents go to work on the electrical wiring, PVC plumbing pipes, heating and air conditioning ducts and anything else they can sink their teeth into. Remember, you don’t have to live in the country to be bothered by wildlife – we deal with wildlife problems even in South Carolina’s largest cities.
RAT BITES
Not only do rodents chew, they bite! If they feel threatened, rats, chipmunks and other rodents can inflict painful bites and pass infections, strep bacteria and even rabies.
PESTS & VECTORS
Vectors such as fleas, mites and ticks are part of the rodent habitat. These feasting insects transmit diseases by feeding on infected rodents and then biting humans. In turn, rodents transmit diseases carried by the insects by biting humans or other animals.
CONTAMINATION
Airborne Transmission: Humans and other mammals can become contaminated with a variety of diseases and viruses through exposure to infected rodents’ droppings, urine and saliva. Rodent droppings should be handled with care, especially after they’ve dried, when they can break apart and release airborne particles that can enter nasal passages and cause infection.
Salmonella: Salmonella bacteria are transmitted to mammals when they eat foods contaminated with an infected rodent’s excrement.
Hantavirus: People can become infected with the Hantavirus by inhaling contaminated dust, touching one’s mouth or nose after handling contaminated materials or by living in a rodent-infested setting.
BIRDS
You don’t often think of birds as being troublemakers. Not until they start damaging your home or business, that is. Certain species including blackbirds, starlings, pigeons, sparrows, grackles, vultures and woodpeckers are considered nuisance birds and can be quite annoying and destructive.
Among the common complaints we hear about birds are that they’re noisy, their nesting materials are fire hazards and they can be a deterrent to guests and customers approaching a home or building.
The biggest problem for many people, however, is bird droppings. Droppings can damage exterior paint and machinery, block drainage systems and create unsightly messes and unpleasant odors. Accumulations of fecal matter can harbor fungi that can lead to serious and even fatal diseases.
VERMIN
Besides the damage they can do to your home, when they feel threatened opossums and raccoons can inflict painful bites and pass infections, strep bacteria and even rabies to family members or pets.
SNAKES
Snakes are becoming an increasing problem for people in the Southeast, as our homes get closer and closer to snakes’ natural sources of food, water and shelter. Most snakes are not poisonous or venomous and, as predators of rodents and insects, they actually perform a good service. Most people, however, would rather not have them hanging around the house. Snakes are cold-blooded and regulate their body temperature by moving to a suitable environment. That’s why you’ll rarely see them out in the open in extreme summer heat for more than 10-20 minutes. They spend most of their time resting in cool, damp, dark, hidden areas.
BATS
Bats aren’t reserved for Halloween and scary movies; they can also take up residence in your home. Although beneficial to humans because they eat mosquitoes and other flying insects, as potential rabies carriers, bats can be dangerous and in homes they can be quite destructive. Once they get inside a building, large colonies can form and can live there for years unless removed. In addition to the noise they make scratching, crawling and squeaking, bat droppings – known as guano – are a sure sign they’ve found a place to roost. Guano has a very distinct odor that can often be smelled from a distance. Worse yet, it can cause respiratory diseases, harbor insects and other unwanted pests and ruin insulation.
EVICT UNWANTED INTRUDERS FROM YOUR HOME
Your home may provide the perfect shelter to wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, opossums, squirrels and other rodents. Wildlife house guests can cause unwanted damage to your home and expose you and your family to harmful and deadly diseases. A wildlife specialist performs a three‑step process of trapping, exclusion and clean-up to ensure that the animal is trapped and removed, the entry point is sealed and your home is returned to a clean environment.
FIRE ANT CONTROL.
Ants are America’s number one pest problem and fire ants are a special breed. These aggressive stingers can have colonies of up to 250,000 workers ready to strike you, your family and your pets.
Fire ants are reddish, quarter-inch-long ants with a nasty sting they’ll use on just about any animal (or human) that crosses their paths. They nest in unsightly mounds of one to two feet in diameter and about six inches high, often near moist areas. They can ruin your landscaping, cause problems with the electrical components in your air conditioning unit and trigger allergic reactions in some people and pets.
Clark’s knows fire ants love South Carolina, and our technicians in Greenville/Spartanburg, Charleston, Columbia and Sumter are specially trained to rid them from your property once and for all.
